One choice

Tuesday, I posted “Do You Think You’re Awesome?”

I love thinking about the time when I truly believed I was awesome, and didn’t deal with the constant ups and downs of adult life. I love watching my kids feel awesome at whatever they do, and believe they can take on the world. I love having them flip this switch almost every morning and tell me that I am awesome, and they are choosing to be awesome too.

But the truth is, some days I don’t choose to be awesome. Some days, the weight of the world is on my shoulders, and I have a difficult time staying positive. I am irritated, and frustrated, and feel defeated. Sometimes, it takes every ounce of energy just to be average, let alone awesome. Some days I feel like I am stuck in quicksand. Some days, I am most certainly not awesome.

One thing I have learned throughout my journey of choosing to live differently is that no matter where you are or what you are facing, you can always choose something different the next time. The next minute, or the next hour, or even the next day. If you’ve had a bad day, you can choose to do something that lightens your mood. If you are feeling defeated, you can meet with a friend who inspires you. You can go work out. You can do whatever it is that is a better choice for you.

I realized this yesterday. I was having a very bad day. There wasn’t really one main reason why, but I was just choosing to focus on the negative instead of the positive. I had plans to meet a friend who has been doing some really cool recent adventures. She is a classic example of a LifeChanger. It only took about five minutes of talking to her to realize that I was the one causing my bad mood. I was choosing to look at what was wrong with the world instead of what was right. She is doing amazing things, and as I’ve said before, LifeChangers fire me up like nothing else. She made me want to get back to living awesome instead of average.

I think learning to see our own patterns of behavior and trigger points is something that can really help us learn to have many more days living awesome versus living average. It does take time, but it is definitely worth it.

How do you choose to change your attitude? I’d love to hear!

Those are great ideas. Spending time with my boys and a nice long walk always helps me too!

Sometimes my husband will say, “wouldn’t it be nice to go for a run?” He can tell when my attitude stinks and he knows running always helps me.

I just ask myself some tough questions. I manage my stress. I decide to have a good attitude.

I usually manage my stress well, too, Larry, but lately it has been a struggle. Asking ourselves tough questions is a great idea.

yes, tammy! this! love this! our world is full of victims. many, tragically, are legitimate victims. however, there is what many dub the “victim mentality” where everything that happens to me is someone else’s fault. also known as – “the blame game.” look, there’s very little we have control over in this world. however, our attitude, mood, and (pro)action toward what we face in the world is well within our control. our own personal happiness is in our control. we choose to be happy or have a bad day or be awesome or not.

I love it when God puts people and moments in our paths like that.

I love this post, because it is a good reminder that our attitude really is a choice (99% of the time).
