Stop Chasing

 In Uncategorized

“Don’t chase people. Be yourself, do your own thing and work hard. The right people – the ones who really belong in your life – will come to you. And stay.” ~ Will Smith

Are you chasing something?

Someone?

Have you ever thought about why you are chasing it?

Is it because someone told you to? Is it what has been expected of you?

This theme keeps coming to me in different forms lately. I know I used to chase people. I used to chase success, too. If I’m completely honest, I still do. But it’s different now.

I want to make a difference. It’s changed WHY I do things. For example, I am in sales. My job is very performance driven. In the past, I chased success in order to be able to say I achieved my goals and to make a certain amount of money. These things aren’t necessarily bad. These are good things to strive for.

But, now my view has changed. I still strive to exceed my goals. The future of my job depends on it. And I still strive to hit a certain amount of money each year. But my why is different. It’s not to be able to say anything. It’s to help us pay off debt, and to be able to give more, and to help fund our dreams. It’s amazing how your outlook changes when your focus changes. Tweet that!

I am working to do what I love. I know success follows when you are doing what you love and doing something that matters.

As far as people go, I am very fortunate to have a strong community around me. People who are dreamers and want to make a difference in the world. I know many people don’t have that. When I started dreaming and making changes, I expected everyone to understand. People (friends and family) who were close to me. They’d be happy, right? They’d encourage me and help me dream, right?

I was surprised to find was how many people actually wouldn’t. They didn’t care. Or encourage. In fact, some wouldn’t even try to understand. And that’s okay. It really is. I don’t expect everyone to understand.

Some of my best supporters and encouragers have come from people I never expected. People I initially didn’t know very well. People who wanted something different too.

Are you chasing people to get them to follow you? If so, stop!

Do what you love. Keep working at it. Keep pushing forward.

Wow…I just blogged this morning about being done chasing somebody else’s dream. So fitting for me to read your post today. Thanks, Tammy.

I think it’s easy to get caught up in what other people think our dream should be. I’ll check out your post!

Wow! I agree with Eileen, WOW is the only exclamation I can come up with after reading this post. I literally was thinking this the other day. That’s when I realized I was chasing EVERYONE’s approval. That’s impossible to get. Light bulb moment indeed. Thanks for this Tammy!
