This is the second book of Shawn Smucker’s that I have read. I really enjoy his writing style. I had been following part of their journey through his blog as they took off for four months on the road with their family. It was very neat to follow their experiences throughout their cross-country trip. This book dives deeper into that experience.
The idea of taking off for four months on an adventure across the country is not one that used to appeal to me. My husband has talked about wanting to do this for a long time, and I always just shrugged my shoulders and didn’t get very excited. However, reading about Shawn and Maile’s trip has really intrigued me.
Shawn and Maile both share their thoughts and reflections from the trip. They are honest and real about the exciting times as well as the frustrating and extremely difficult times. They question many times why they are doing it, and face many obstacles along the way.
The biggest thing that stuck out to me was how much they appreciated the view on the road. I often find myself marveling at how different the landscapes are in other regions of the country when I fly. They got to soak it in through the view from the bus. They met people they had only known online, as well as total strangers who touched their hearts. This trip changed them in many ways.
Their story left me longing for the time to take off as a family and experience an adventure like this. If you are wanting to take a risk, or start a dream, or learn to find adventure, this is a great book for you.
Have you ever taken an exciting road trip adventure? I’d love to hear about it!
