Living Beyond Rich

 In Uncategorized

I am excited to give away another free book! Even though I absolutely love giving away books, I only do it with books that I would highly recommend. I don’t give away any books that I haven’t learned something from or would not suggest that you read.

Today’s book is by Jen McDonough, or Iron Jen. I have to admit that I was interested in her story just from her nickname. She has an incredible transformation story of going from a couch potato to completing an Ironman Triathlon. Oh yeah, and she is a working mom of four kids!! Holy cow, that short sentence alone inspires me.

But Jen’s story only starts there. She has truly transformed her entire life, including paying off over $150K in debt. Living Beyond Rich explains this amazing story. It is the story of how she and her husband worked hard, thought they were doing the right things, and then one day woke up with a medical emergency and drowning in debt.

Stories like this are near to my heart as I know so many people in similar situations. My heart aches as I think of so many people we know who are barely surviving because they were following what they considered to be “The American Dream” and allowing themselves to accumulate significant debt.

My husband and I got caught in this trap as well. Our house of cards came crashing down several years ago when the industry I was working in melted down, and we found ourselves without the predictability of a significant income and with overwhelming debt. It was a scary time and truly tested our resolve and marriage. Thankfully, we worked through it and got help.

Jen talks about her admiration for Dave Ramsey and his Financial Peace University. This was also the program that we leaned on for help in finally facing our finances head on.  It was life changing.

This book was a quick read with engaging personal stories as well as stories of others in similar situations. If you are struggling financially, or know someone who is, I would highly recommend this book. Not only does Jen give practical advice, but she also motivates and inspires you. She has been there. She knows what the feelings of panic are when the bills roll in and there is no way to pay them. She knows how crushing the weight of debt can be on every aspect of your life. But, she’s found a way to beat it. And she wants to help you beat it as well. She wants you to live beyond rich!

One of my favorite quotes from the book was this:

Imperfection is a part of life…embrace it, learn from it, and triumph. Tweet that!

None of us are perfect. And by sharing our stories, we can help others realize that they are not alone.

Jen has graciously given me a copy to give away to one of my readers. Leave a comment below to be entered to win. I’ll announce the winner tomorrow.

Do you long to live beyond rich? How would your life be different?

Hi Tammy, I’ve heard a lot of good things about Jen’s book. I believe that when I am debt free, it is going to free me up to live much more generously. I’m looking forward to the day when I am free from the burden of credit card debt. Nice review!

as a dave ramsey fan and proponent of financial peace university, i love love love these kinds of stories. they kind of remind me of that thomas edison quote that goes, “if we did all the things we were capable of, we would literally astound ourselves.” it’s so easy to settle, to give in, to limit ourselves by our thoughts that then turn into (in)actions. so those stories of people saying enough is enough and kicking butt and completely changing their lives are always so awesome!

I know. Me too, Tim! We have learned so much from Dave Ramsey, and I love these stories of people who have done it. We’re getting there and have made significant progress. Jen’s book really inspired me to kick it into high gear again!

Great post, Tammy. Love this book by Jen McDonough! The content is fantastic. But even more, Jen is the real deal. She practices what she preaches and that makes the book powerful and authentic.

Love hearing about how people overcome huge amounts of debt like that…my husband and I are working through a smaller amount, so if she can do it-I know we can, too!

I know! Me too. Jen even uses that in her tagline. “If I can do it, you can too.”
