What you have NOT been called to do

 In Uncategorized

Dave Gibbons is amazing. If you are not familiar with him, he is an innovation strategist, author, culture specialist, and creative communicator. He is the Pastor of a group of third-culture faith communities called Newsong.

He has been a guest speaker at our church multiple times over the last few years. I always look forward to his visits, as he speaks directly from his heart, and loves our church community. This time was no different.

Dave has a gift. He is an amazing visionary and I believe his heart is closely aligned with God’s vision for the people around him. It is almost impossible to describe. Each time he visits, he offers to pray with people at the end of the service. I have heard story after story of how it felt like he was able to see directly into their hearts. My husband and I experienced this firsthand as well. He prayed with us, and we were amazed at the things he prayed about without hearing any of it from us first.

Now, I know you may find this hard to believe. In fact, I have a hard time understanding it sometimes as well. The only thing I can say is that the presence of God is extremely thick around Dave. I told someone that I feel like he leaks God. He knows what it is like to live his life full of God and he can’t possibly contain it. It is an awesome feeling to be around him.

There were many things he said that stuck with me.

This has been the most powerful one.

Wow.

Let that sink in for a moment.

This theme has been coming to me over and over lately.

God doesn’t want us to be mediocre.

He doesn’t want us to be average.

He doesn’t want us to lead a boring, ordinary life.

He wants to use us.

He has plans for us.

He wants us to say Yes to what He has in store for us.

Honestly, this both scares and frustrates me, as I am still trying to figure out exactly how I believe He wants to use me. But, for now, I know that sharing my heart and encouraging others with my words is helping me step out of the bubble of mediocrity.

How are you challenging yourself to live a life of purpose?

Great post! I think the biggest thing to remember with this is that without complete surrender to Jesus Christ, you cannot fully respond to what He calls you to do. Surrey is difficult but necessary. I think it’s also important to realize that as a Christ follower we are even more exposed to suffering. Just because we follow Christ doesn’t mean we are shielded from heartache. He might lead us to something (and probably will) that makes us give things up so that we can rely on God more. I love this post!
