Wrecked: An Interview with Jeff Goins

 In Uncategorized

My first post as a contributing writer to Godly Writers is live today. You can read it here. If you are visiting from there, welcome! I look forward to connecting with you.

I first started following Jeff Goins about a year ago. I learned about him at my first Quitter conference. He has a really great blog, and has been an inspiration to me.

I recently had the privilege of reading an advance copy of his new book, Wrecked.  I am excited to be a part of his book launch team, and will be posting my review of the book soon. It is really, really good. It will be released August 1st. Jeff will be offering some great incentives if you buy it the week of the launch. You can get more details here.

Jeff was kind enough to spend time with me and answer a few questions. Enjoy this brief preview of his thoughts behind the book.

Tammy: Why did you feel compelled to write this book?

Jeff: You know, if I’m honest, I wasn’t thinking about it. The publisher asked me if I had thought about it, and I hadn’t really. But the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea and believed the book needed to be written.

Somewhere in the writing of it, I realized that it was an important message. It was a discovery process for me as I was writing it. Maybe there’s a lesson in there somewhere.

Tammy:  How do you take small steps to start making a difference?

Jeff: Great question. I asked Ron Sider this question once, and he said,

“We get on with it.”

Truth is we know what we need to do (most of the time). We just need to have the courage to do it.

So how do you take small steps? Great question. I think you know better than I do. I don’t want to sound like I’m being dodgy, but I think we’re each responsible for answering that question ourselves — with how we live our lives. For me, it means putting myself in places I’m not comfortable. When I show up there, stuff just seems to happen.

Maybe most of making a difference is simply showing up.

Tammy: The endorsements are quite impressive. For those of us who have yet to write a book, what advice can you give in that area?

Jeff: Just ask… and make it easy. I was surprised by how many people were wiling to give me the time of the day. But I tried to make it super simple for them. I gave a LOT of info about the book, a clear deadline (with reminders) and included sample endorsements (even offering to help them write it, if need be).

When someone endorses your book, they’re doing you a favor. Most people want to help, so it’s your job to relieve as much of the burden as possible.

Tammy: What do you want someone reading this book to do when they finish it?

Jeff: I want them to change something, anything. To turn right when they’d rather turn left. To quit their job or go shopping on the “other side” of the train tracks — whatever it is you’re avoiding, I hope this book calls you stop. Because that’s where we grow: when we face the tough situations in life we typically want to avoid.

Tammy: What was your biggest lesson learned while writing this book?

Jeff: It doesn’t have to be perfect to be good (even now, there are about fifty things I’d change if I could, but at some point you just have to let go).

Tammy:  How can we pray for you?

Thanks for asking. I just want this message to have a chance at reaching as many people as possible. Pray that it would spread.

Thank you, Jeff, for spending a few minutes with me. Thank you also for writing this book and challenging us to step out of our comfortable life and make a difference in this world. I am so excited to recommend this book to others.

Jeff Goins is a writer. He lives in Nashville with his wife and new son. You can follow him on his blog here, or on Twitter here.

I’ll be posting more about the book soon.

Excited to read Jeff’s book. I’m behind on my reading (as part of his launch team). Vacation and other life commitments. But I will for sure be done before his book releases. Thanks for sharing this interview. Loved it. I have much respect for Jeff and his work.
